THE GREAT BLUNDER: THE EARLY PHYSIOLOGISTS STUDYING MUSCLES' BEGINNING
The early physiologists studying muscles began by concentrating on the neuro-mechanical aspects of their functions. Muscles were compared to nerves as they conducted electric current across their membranes just like nerves. Muscles and nerves are the only groups of tissue that respond to electrical stimuli and produce their own potential. Their membranes are charged and are very receptive to electrical impulses from other nerves endings. Muscle cells obviously have an additional quality and that is their contractibility. Thus the electrical nature of muscles allows them to spread 'messages' quickly across their entire length (sometimes muscle cells can be as long as the entire muscle) and facilitate contraction uniformly. No other form of message can be transmitted so quickly, given the existing resistance (of fluids, proteins).
